Hit And Run in GA

Georgia hit and run laws are in place to protect all of us, and there are significant penalties on the books for violating these laws. The legal requirements concerning how to proceed when you are involved in an accident are enforced by the possible imposition of these penalties, but the fact is that they are really just a matter of common sense and human decency. When you have been engaged in a traffic accident that has caused damage to any property, and/or injury to any individual, you are required to stop at the scene and do three things.

First, you need to make sure that the driver of the other vehicle has your contact information. Give them your name and address, and the registration number of the vehicle you were driving. Secondly, you should go ahead and show your driver's license to the other driver so that they know that the contact information that you have given them is accurate. And lastly, if anyone in the other vehicle is injured and in need of assistance, it is your legal responsibility to help them obtain that assistance.

If an individual is involved in an accident and just drives off, failing to comply with the above requirements, they may be guilty of a hit and run offense. If there are no serious injuries involved in the accident, the hit and run charge would probably be a misdemeanor that carries with it a fine of between $300 and $1,000, up to a year in jail, and a mandatory driver's license suspension. If there was a serious injury or death involved in the accident, the hit and run charge would be a felony, and that brings with it a mandatory jail sentence of not less than one year and no more than five years.

Clearly, a hit and run charge is a very serious matter, and anyone who is facing such a charge needs to retain the services of a competent and experienced Georgia criminal lawyer. A simple traffic mistake can turn into a major legal problem if it is not addressed quickly and aggressively via robust legal advocacy.
